Quiles at the German GP — highlights
The MotoGP World Championship has reached the halfway point of the 2026 season at the historic Sachsenring. The short and winding route, traveled in a counter-clockwise direction, received three days of sunshine and another outstanding performance from CFMOTO Aspar.
Máximo Quiles fought for victory in Moto3 and finished second, achieving his tenth podium in eleven races. Daniel Holgado also achieved second place in Moto2.
Quiles had two busy days of preparation, with crashes on Friday and Saturday. Still, he was the fastest in the second free practice and went through Q1 to compete for pole position. Marco Morelli increased his pace and finished training in the top three.
In qualifying, Morelli was just 0.024 seconds off pole and secured his first presence on the front row in his debut season. Quiles was less than two tenths behind his teammate and started from first place on the second row.
Quiles at the German GP — the competition in detail
The 23-lap race started with five riders competing for the podium. Quiles and Morelli were part of the group, but Quiles managed to escape with Brian Uriarte to battle for victory in the last ten laps. At turn 13, Quiles tried to maintain more speed, but ended up just 0.063 seconds away from victory, in the closest Moto3 final ever at the Sachsenring.
Morelli fought two opponents for third place and was just 0.007 seconds off the podium, finishing fourth. Quiles went on to lead the championship with a 104-point advantage and Morelli moved up to fourth place. CFMOTO Aspar maintained the team lead.
Quiles recognized that he didn't have the same speed as Brian in the fast corners, but he valued the points for the championship and another podium. He thanked him for the support and promised to continue working.
In Moto2, Alonso arrived motivated by his first victory of the season in the Netherlands. Both drivers worked on the set-up and were near the top during practice. Holgado qualified fourth and Alonso eighth.
In the 25 laps of the race, Holgado maintained a consistent pace in the lead group and closed in on Iván Ortolá in the final laps. The final attempt at turn 13 was not enough and he ended up six tenths behind the winner, achieving his fourth podium of the year.
Alonso was just a few seconds behind his teammate when a heavy crash at the exit of turn 3, already halfway through the race, forced him to abandon. He remained third in the championship, just one point ahead of Holgado. Both remained in the title fight.
Holgado was pleased to return to the podium in a race with little grip. He tried to win until the end and said he wanted to work during the summer break to get ready for the second half of the season.
The next stage would take the championship to Silverstone, one of the longest and most varied circuits on the calendar, after a three-week break.
